关于社会发展动力问题,饶勒斯试图通过调和唯心史观与唯物史观的折衷主义来进行解读。拉法格认为这种折衷主义实际上是一种历史唯心主义,是对历史唯物主义的诘难。拉法格把阐释马克思主义哲学作为直接任务,捍卫了唯物史观,但他同样出现误读,即将唯物史观理解成了经济决定论。恩格斯在其晚年通信中对"经济决定论"予以批判,重申了唯物史观的真实意蕴。
On the dynamics of social development Jaures tried to interpret the issue by reconciling the eclecticism idealism and materialism. Lafargure believes that this is actually a kind of eclecticism of historical idealism, which is in fact the criticism of historical materialism. Lafargure took the explanation of the concept of Marx's philosophy as a direct task to defend the historical materialism. But he also appeared misinterpretation, which is to understand the historical materialism as the economic determinism. In his later years, Engels criticized the "economic determinism" and reiterated the true meaning of historical materialism.
