王国维写作《红楼梦评论》是在1904年春夏之际,正当作者处于人生低谷,在南通师范学校担任教职时期。王国维原本体质羸弱,南通时期病痛不断,性格又忧郁孤僻,兼之现实生活颇多坎坷不平之事,故借叔本华解脱之说与释迦泥洹之境,来阐发《红楼梦》的悲剧精神。其诗词作品,堪为此间王国维精神苦旅的般般注解。

WANG Guowei wrote Comments on A Dream of Red Mansions in the late spring and early summer of 1904,in which period he was touching the low point of his life and worked as a faculty member of Nantong Normal University. WANG Guowei originally had a weak constitution. The physical pains continually bothered him even when he worked in Nantong. His character was melancholic and unsociable. He also faced the unsatisfactory reality of life in that period. Therefore,he explicated the tragic spirit of A Dream of Red Mansions on the excuse of liberation theory by Schopenhauer and the conception of Sakya-muni and Nirvana. WANG Guowei’s poems worked as an evidence of the spiritual pains which tortured him in that period.
