Wong Bik-wan, a Hong Kong-based writer, after spending years gathering material, has completed her book, Children of Darkness, a novel about drug-addicts that reveals love of and concern with its characters, hidden in the dark, everywhere. This article, starting with a discussion of how the writing is done with heart, demonstrates how the author endeavours to enter into their world and, in order to tell their stories in a more realistic way and to hear their own voices, how she has changed her erstwhile violent and bloody style by adopting the first-person narrative in a plain manner of story-telling with simple sentences, mixed with the Cantonese dialect that could all be described as her artistic expression used to achieve this creative concept, apart from the fact that the male protagonist, situated on the edge of society and in a corner, can tell of the world of human emotions in an unobtrusive manner.
