This paper analyzes the American national sense of crisis consistently reflected in American litera- ture through a comparative study of The Call of the Wild and The Rise of the Planet of Apes. Americans take pride in their own greatness. However, their pride is always controlled in that they are aware of the threat to their national security, and they are worried about the government being too powerful and out of control and about the threats to their freedom.
