This paper aims to describe the kind of inquiry that makes sense for architecture in our time, explaining the kind of thought and study that prepares young architects for the challenging task of establishing connections between an individual's sense of how things actually are and how they ought to be. This is the kind of inquiry, and indeed of teaching, that has been attempted for the past couple of decades in the Department of Architecture, School of Design, University of Pennsylvania. The article proposes that two forms of contribution are required of teachers and students: participation in the existing horizon of expectations and the reformulation of those expectations in the light of new possibilities, new kinds of drawing or documentation, and new kinds of thinking.
