This essay intends to give an interpretation of the Split Courtyard House under the theme of seven pairs of proposed architectural contradictions.The proposition of seven dualities is not only an effort of analyzing the work itself,but rather an open discussion about the general problems in the renovation of old buildings in Beijing.Do the architects＇ answers to these seven contradictions have to meet the common value orientation of modern architecture？ Does it mean that the architects have to compromise in the renovation projects of old buildings in Beijing？ Do we need to face the architectural complexities that these projects bring about with a more inclusive and open mind？
