With the global economic growth shifting from the western countries to Asia, the foreign trade structure of Hong Kong is undergoing restructuring as its economic and trade ties with Asian new economies strengthened. The 21 st Century Maritime Silk Road initiative brings in opportunities to the development of port and maritime industries in Hong Kong. In the meantime, ports in the mainland will further internationalize under the initiative, which will chalenge Hong Kong's role as the regional hub in Southern China. This paper examines the latest development trend of port and maritime industries. Two trends, i.e., port regionalization and port cooperation are identified. Hong Kong needs to follow these two trends and cultivate port regionalization in the Pearl River Delta and develop cooperative relationship with ports along the 21 st Century Maritime Silk Road.
