摘要
Among the Panyao, a branch of the Yao nationality, the male head of the family must wander in the underworld during the religious ritual Duyinchuang, unflinchingly offering his life with the spiritual guidance of the Daoist shaman master. A form of worship for the Deity of Panwang, it provides relief for the ancestors from their miseries and they, in turn, will bless the family with bumper harvests and other good fortune. In Jinxiu Yao Autonomous County, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, this ritual can be traced back more than a century. Duyinchuang is a two-day journey brimming with fear and tribulation for it is said that if a bond exists between the Panyao man and the netherworld, the man's soul will continue to wander there and never return to the real world. Duyinchuang is usually held during the off-season in winter.
