When 1 lived in Canada, the first week of January was a huge breath of relief. Often still shrouded in a sense of holiday, or perhaps more aptly described as a post-holiday haze, Canadians generally had not yet recovered from the chaos of celebrations, but everyone was collectively over the "holiday hump." Christmas and New Year's Day were behind us; a new year, full of promise, was unfolding slowly, and its first week was the quiet, stunned silence before life resumed its familiar rhythm. No more holiday mayhem, just the future I straight ahead.
