A Talk on How to Understand and Evaluate the May Fourth New Cultural Movement

对五四新文化运动的认识和评价问题,不仅牵涉对这一文化运动的性质、功过等认定,也牵涉到对中国文化的未来走向的认定。轻易地加以怀疑、给以否定,是不公正、不科学的。除了这一基本认识和态度外,还应注意:首先,是关于不同价值范畴的辨析问题;其次,应重视对历史结构的研究,在结构中认识、把握各参与因素的实际价值意义;再次,应对对象本身就有的及其发展的动态的复杂性,进行细致深入的挖掘和研究。五四新文化运动不是停留在历史某一点上的突发事件,而是一个不断调适发展的过程。

The issue of how to understand and evaluate the May Fourth New Cultural Movement involves not only the recognition of the nature of this cultural movement and its merits and demerits, but also that of the future direction of Chinese culture. It is both unfair and unscientific to doubt or even deny this rashly. And,in addition to this basic understanding and attitude, the following points are at the same time to be concerned about： the first is the issue about the differentiation of the categories of various values; the second, the emphasis on the research of historical structure in which the significance of the actual val- ue of the involved factors is to be understood and grasped ; and the third, a detailed and in - depth exca- vation and research is to be done on the complexity of the dynamic of the object itself and that in its de- velopment. In a word, the May Fourth New Cultural Movement is not an emergency at a certain point of history, but a developing process of constant adjustment.
