摘要
林语堂性近老庄,崇尚自然无为。编译《老子的智慧》时,他借老子"无为"之道译老子之言:"知其雄,守其雌",追求"愚蠢的翻译"。在遣词造句、修辞及篇章等层面,寻求确切词语以保留原文诗性言说、再现老子洗练文风、传译东方直觉思维,有效实现了其传播中国智慧、会通中西文化的目的。翻译中华典籍,林氏"无为"之译可资借鉴。
Identified with Taoism in spirit, Lin Yutang worships nature and non-interference. When translating The Wisdom of Laotse, Lin employs Laotse's principle of non-interference: "be aware of the Male, but keep to the Female" ; he advocates "stupid translation" in terms of words, syntax, rhetoric and textual arrangement. By seeking exact words, he succeeded in preserving Laotse' s poetic language and terse style, reflecting intuitive thinking in eastern culture, realizing his goal of disseminating Chinese wisdom and integrating eastern and western culture. This non- interference can serve as an effective strategy in translating Chinese classics.
