Foot-binding and Social Memory

古代中国缠足一事,作为极具代表性的身体实践的案例,以一种极端、另类的方式,记录和传承着古代中国社会特殊的集体记忆。其操演过程中复杂的仪式、文本记录的刻意美化,都使之具有了合理性与合法性,因而能够传承千年。考证"缠足"本身包含的集体记忆及其传承方式,有利于分析此记忆形成的因革,更加了解本民族的历史及其文化,对我们今天的文化研究有着重要意义。

Foot-binding, as a representative body practice case, recorded and inherited a kind of special collective memory in an extreme, unique way in ancient China. Its complex rituals and the deliberate beautification in the process of text records made it have the rationality and legitimacy, thus it could be inherited for thousands of years. The research on the collective memory contained in ＂foot-binding＂ and the way of its inheritance is helpful to analyze the memory formation, to get more knowledge about the history and culture of our nation, and thus benefits today＇s culture research.
