Chinese ancient poetry,which inspires western translators to produce classical English versions,is a national legacy with a longstanding history. With this in perspective,this article is intended to explore the denotative and connotative functions of such paratextual elements as thick translation and intertextuality through the identification of the feasible communication model of promoting the tacit inferences and presenting the placid references. Thus the two-w ay transfers between the translated text proper and the dominant paratexts bring the potential western readers of English translations of Chinese ancient poetry somew here closer to the actual accessibility and the maximal comprehensiveness.
