The original meaning of"Shi"is not men, officials, farmers or warriors as claimed by previous scholars.Rather,"Shi"originally meant"Wenshi"( scholars),which were an integral part of China's early Confucian education. It emerged after Zhou Gong established the ritual music system and its main meaning is similar to that of the contemporary"Shizi". "Shi"appear 21 times in The Book of Songs, demonstrating the evolution of the connotation of this particular term.
