“Zero Translation”Reconsidered

"零翻译"概念自提出以来,一直颇受学界关注。然而就"零翻译"应用原则和范畴而论,目前仍莫衷一是。本文以当代相关翻译理论为依据,从文本翻译的忠实性原则和译者所承载的历史使命出发,结合当今语言的发展趋势和词语流变现象,从语义、语用、文体三个层面探讨"零翻译"使用的前提条件和适用原则。研究表明,"零翻译"对于保留原语的形式和思想意义,打破因语言文化差异所造成的不可译性难题,具有其特定的功能和价值。"零翻译"这一翻译策略的恰当使用,可有助于促进本族语言与文化的发展。

The concept of 'Zero Translation'has always been debated in the circle of translation. However,opinions vary in its working mechanism and application scope. Based on the contemporary translation theories about the loyalty principle and translators' responsibility,this paper aims to discuss the prerequisites and guidelines of'Zero Translation'from semantic,pragmatic and stylistic aspects. The study suggests that 'Zero Translation'has its unique function and special value in keeping the source language's form and meaning and helping to attack problems of untranslatability arising from cultural differences. If used effectively,'Zero Translation'can be contributive to the reform and development of a nation's culture and language.
