对于青岛人来说劈柴院并不单单是一个耳熟能详的地名，它是一个承载了许多欢乐记忆的市井大院。它在青岛人的心目中，就如同北京老天桥、上海大世界、南京夫子庙、济南大观园。

Pichaiyuan is a place known by generations of Qingdao citizens.In their eyes,it is more than a place name.It embodies the street culture of Qingdao of over 100 years.Many Qingdao citizens are familiar with the place and take it as a site representing history and their memory.Though known by many people as Pichaiyuan,it is actually named Jiangning Road which is unfamiliar for many.In 1902 after Germany occupied Qingdao,they built this fork road which leads to Zhongshan Road in the east,Beijing Road in the north and Hebei Road in the west.Since mid-1920 s,it has gradually become the most prosperous center for business,catering and entertainment as well as the most attractive place in Qingdao.Its great prosperity lasted from 1930 s or 1940 s to 1990 s before its decline due to the shift of the city's key development area to the east.
