In recent years, many scholars have offered their opinions on whether or not the Doubting Antiquity movement led by Hu Shi and Gu Jiegang of the early 20 th century was inspired by the studies in Meiji Japan. Yet no consensus has been reached. From what we know as of today,Hu Shi,Gu Jiegang as well as Qian Xuantong might have certain knowledge of some Japanese studies of Chinese antiquity, such as the annotated Cui Dongbi's Posthumous Writings,Shiratori Kurakichi's denial of the historicity of Yao,Shun and Yu,the debate on the pre-Qin calendar and Nait? Konan's'Add-on Principle. 'But it remains unclear if the Doubting Antiquity movement was indebted to the above Japanese studies. In a nutshell, there seemed no direct connection between the historical Pyrrhonism of Meiji Japan and the debates on Chinese high antiquity by the scholars in Republic China.
