摘要
E. L. Doctorow's Homer & Langley makes an imagination and construction of urban living space : the great changes of block reflect the capricious urban landscape, showing a sense of estrangement in urban life ;the fading of Collyer Brothers' luxury home,in a close relation with the protagonists' destiny, not only is a specific symbol of modern civilization's impact on families, but also shows an interrogation of tradi- tional life about the modern urban living space;the Central Park provides a tranquil space for urban people's meditation, which is regarded as modern people's oasis on their spiritual wasteland. In this novel based on the Collyer Brothers' story, Doctorow focuses on modern people's living situation in urban space, showing his observations and understandings of urban life during the modernization.
