Japanese writer Murakami Haruki holds a severe critical attitude towards the social structure of his country after the Second Word War. This paper analyzes this critical attitude in his novel After Dark, and reveals that this critical gesture in his literary creation is a communication with the world culture,an embodiment of the universal significance of his literature. The loneliness and depression of urban men in modern times are well reflected through the characters in Murakami's works. Along with the social modernization and the material progress, the urban men in modern times are always entangled with pressure, loneliness and emptiness. As a result, the normality of humanity is often tortured,or even buried. According to Murakami's comprehension,it is the undisputable violence and evil that he manages to criticize in his works. By means of describing such violence and evil,on the one hand Murakami criticizes the social system of Japan in modern times, and on the other hand, readers are expected to introspect the modern society in the perspective of its universality and contemporaneity.
