Fang Yizhi (1611-71) infused his insights on the Changes into the designing of the Central Five-oriented temple, permeating this Buddhist site with the quintessence of the He tu (Yellow River Map) and Luo shu (Luo River Chart). The overall arrangement of the buildings of the temple was based on the Luo shu and the center corresponding to Five was the location of the Great Buddha's Hall. As a place expected to he the most advanced level of meditation, the Peng Xue Hall (com- memorating the famous Song [960-1279] Buddhist priest Xue Dou affiliated with the Chan Sect of Buddhism) was located in the northwest corresponding to trigram Qian [ ] ; a place expected to demonstrate that Buddha in man' s heart/mind is nothing but Pure Land, the Hujue (lit., calling for enlightenment symbolizing the Pure Land Sect of Buddhism) Hall was ar- ranged in the northeast correlated with trigram Gen [ ] which symbolizes the beginning and end, honesty, and stillness. In addition, based on the He tu and Luo shu theory, any room of the temple can be an embodiment of the Center at Five which designates the Great One (or Supreme Ultimate), this manifests the realm of the Huayan Sect of Buddhism. In short, being in alignment with the nine palaces theory, this site incorporated all sects of Buddhism into one and embodies the union of Buddhism and Confucianism merged under Fang Yizhi's thought on the Changes.
