Study on the Legends of Emperor HanGaozu in The Basic Annals of Emperor Han Gaozu in Historical Records

《高祖本纪》采录了诸多有关汉高祖刘邦的传说,这些传说应产生于汉高祖刘邦起义反秦之际,与汉初尊刘活动有关,并且在后来很长的一段时间内,为维护西汉统治发挥了重要作用。这些传说是司马迁采录进《高祖本纪》的,并非后人增窜。司马迁采录这些传说入传的原因有许多,既是为了文本的完整,性格命运的突显,也是为了将西汉与殷、周、秦并列,纳入殷、周、秦、汉的大历史系统,以"通古今之变"。

In The Basic Annals of Emperor Han Gaozu, there are lots of legends. They must be born in the time when Emperor Han Gaozu started to revolt Qin, and was related to the movement of respecting Liu. They played an important role in maintaining the ruling of Han dynasty. Sima Qian collected these legends to make this chapter integrated, and prominently represented the character of Gaozu. At the same time, he put Han dynasty in the great system including Yin dynasty, Zhou dynasty and Qin dynasty to＂comprehend the change from antiquity down to the present＂.
