《草堂诗余》是南宋前期出现的一部词选集,其后即有增修本出现,这种增修的工作入元至明,仍在进行。宋刊本的全貌不可知,宋人的记载可令后人窥见一斑。元、明人的增删窜易,却使得宋本的面目变得既复杂又迷离。之所以如此,书商的运作,出于射利、惜费、易成、速售等目的,使得这部词选集的出版在明朝自始至终都保持着一定的热度,也促使明代词学学术的活跃。

Cao Tang Shi Yu is a Ci poetry selection, appearing in the early stage of the Southern Song Dynasty, and has been amended in Yuan and Ming dynasty. The panorama of Song Dynasty edition of is unknown, but the records can make people get a glimpse. The additions and cut in Yuan and Ming make this Song Dynasty edition become complicated and confusing. Because the aims of the booksellers are to get profits, to reduce the cost, have a quick sale, the sales of Cao Tang Shi Yu are like hot cakes in Ming Dynasty from beginning to end, which contributes to the active Ci poetry academic activity in the Ming dynasty.
