The Road to the Harmonious-A Comparison of Mathematical and Physical Foundation between Chinese and Western Music

中西音乐皆以数理为本体构架,以"和谐"为最高旨归,展现出中西艺术精神的会通。从美学层面比较中西和谐观,其不同之处在于,具有科学精神的西方音乐"协和观"展示的是一种理论智慧;而以中和之美为核心的中国音乐"中和观"阐释的是一种践行的智慧,是一种为人之道,突出的是生活领域中的审美主体所具有的生命体验。比较即对话,阐释中西音乐思想的差异,旨在为中西音乐间的相互理解、交流与互补搭建桥梁。

Framed by mathematical foundations, both Chinese and western music perceive harmony as their supreme goal, which reveals the integration of these two different art spirits. Penetrating into and then comparing the harmonious views of aesthetic level, we work out the following differences. Specifically speaking, western music,featured by rational spirit, displays theoretical wisdom, whereas Chinese music, centered by the neutral beauty,reflects a wisdom of practice, and rules of conduct. Therefore, Chinese music is usually considered to give more prominence to the life experience acquired by the aesthetic subjects. Comparison is dialogue, which clarifies the differences between Chinese and western music thoughts, aiming at building a bridge for mutual understanding and communication.
