1792年,英国派遣以马戛尔尼为全权特使的政府代表团对中国进行访问,英使团访华的第一站选择了舟山。随行画师威廉·亚历山大等人用画笔详细记录了舟山港、定海城、舟山民风民俗和民间信仰、普陀山佛寺,以及囚犯、士兵和帆船的情况。英国人看中的是舟山的港口和贸易功能,舟山是他们梦寐以求的最佳贸易口岸。
In 1792, the British sent a government delegation, in which Macartney was the sole spe-cial envoy, to visit China.They chose Zhoushan as their first station.The accompanying artist Wil-liam Alexander and others kept a detailed record of Zhoushan Port, Dinghai City, folk customs and folk beliefs in Zhoushan, Buddhist temples in Putuo Mountain, as well as prisoners, soldiers and sailings in their paintings.The British took a fancy to Zhoushan port and its trade functions, and Zhoushan was their coveted best trade port.
