There was a variety of different kinds of scientific rewards of technology during the Northern Song Dynasty, including imperial edict, rank promotional and physical rewards. These rewards mainly focused on various applied fields, such as medicine, astronomy, constructional engineering, weapon manufacturing, etc. The Northern Song Dynasty is distingaished anti characteristic of its scientific rewards of technology, such as the expansion of the reward fields, the increase of categories and the change of the reward proportion. Actually, the fields of the rewards were closely related to the social demands of the time. Meanwhile, it is noticed that such kind of rewards may have been random and lacked of review mechanism.
