In October 2012, Yantai Municipal Museum conducted a rescue excavation to a mural tomb of the Song Dynasty discovered during a basic construction project at Nanwuli Village in Wenchang Subdistrict of Laizhou City, Shandong Province. The single-chambered brick tomb simulates a wooden structure and faces south. The murals in the tomb are well preserved, with scenes including a procession, banquet preparatinn, female attendants and a musical performance. In addition, an epitaph and inscriptions in ink are fimnd on the wall of the tomb. The mural tomb at Nanwuli Village is, to date, the only tomb discovered within Shandong Province with its epitaph written on the wall of the passage. It is also the first mural tomb of the Song Dynasty with exact date found on the Shandong Peninsula. It has significant value for the study of Northern Song Dynasty burial customs, systems and structures, as well as for the evolution of costumes. It also sets a benchmark for dating Song Dynasty tombs in the Shandong Peninsula area.
