The Buddhist statues of the Thousand-Buddha Grottoes at Sheshan, Nanjing were mainly constructed and appreciated by the "Qing Qi Tu Min" and the connected intellectuals, monks, the royal fami- lies of Qi and Liang, and the local residents of Sheshan. Due to the difference in beliefand traditions, the in- digenous people of Jiangnan area and the noble or aristocratic families who fled to Jiangnan at earlier times showed little interest on them. While the religious activities of the Thousand-Buddha Grottoes had limited impact on the society of the Southern Dynasty, they led to the development trend of areas north to Nanjing to- ward "Qing-Ji". It is suggested to take the constructors and appreciators' geographic backgrounds into con- sideration when analyzing the correlations between Buddhist statues of different regions.
