Living in the late 19th-century United States of America,Emily Dickinson experienced many paradoxes in her life, the most fundamental of which is that she chose self-assertive poetry writing in a society that demanded self-renunciation from women. Through a textual analysis of her poems and an examination of her living environment and life experience, this paper reveals that Emily Dickinson consciously or unconsciously adopted the strategy of paradox in her poems and achieved self-assertion by self-denial. Origi-nating from the paradoxical situation in the poet's real life, the paradoxes in Dickinson's poems help to counteract and transcend real life paradoxes and constitute the most important part of Dickinson's poetic achievement. These paradoxes, therefore, serve as an important angle for the reader to get a deeper understanding of Dickinson and her poems.
