Donald Barthelme is one of the most important novelists of American postmodemism. In his fictions, readers and crit- ics always find them difficult to understand because of the fragmentary form, and obscure content. In this essay, it endeavors to analyze := Barthelme' s The Glass Mountain with the application of defamiliarization theory, which was put forward by Russian formalists Viktor Shklovsky. By so doing, it aims to provide a new approach for the readers to appreciate the story and its sense of beauty.
