How forest tree species responds to habitat fragmentation has been a hot issue for a long time.Population size and population isolation are two major factors in such studies, other factors such as canopy openness earn little focus.Canopy openness can affect mating pattern of populations, respond to habitat fragmentation via pollen dispersion and seed production. In this study,we chose Chinese pine(Pinus tabulaeformis Carr.)patches as case model of habitat fragmentation, measured patch openness representing canopy openness, obtained data of seed production and mating pattern via counting and paternity analysis respectively.Correlation analysis indicated that patch openness was significantly correlated with selfing rate and marginally correlated with seed production.Patch openness might affect mating pattern and seed production by adjusting light conditions within patches.Although no obvious proofs have shown that patch openness influence pollen dispersal, our results indicated that population size and isolation change are not the only aspect of habitat fragmentation, but it should be a multidimension question.
