The Zi （north） wu （south） Passage is the only passage named by the orientation among the ancient passages linking Shaanxi and Sichuan. Focusing on the origin of the naming of the Ziwu Passage, this paper discusses the developments of the history of science and technology and the elements of knowledge connoted in this name, and the understanding to the meridian concept in the ancient times reflected in the social practices.
