Essays on the Nü si Fangding—quadripod Collected in Shanghai Museum

上海博物馆旧藏的一件女■方鼎,对其年代的认定历来颇有争议。通过对商末周初方鼎的比较分析,女■方鼎所体现的商晚期特征比较突出。器内壁铸铭文十七个字,"女■"之"女"字磨沥较甚,过去旧释为"■"有误,"堇"应当读为"勤"。铭文的大意为女■勤于王事有功,在癸日这一天,王赏赐了■二朋贝,为此而作祭器。

There have been disagreements on the date of a ＂Ntisi Fangding-quadripod＂ collected in Shanghai Museum. Through the comparative analysis to the fangding-quadripods of the late Shang and early Western Zhou Dynasties, this paper found that the Niasi Fangding has prominent features of the late Shang Dynasty. On the inner wall, a 17-character inscription is cast, the character ＂女＂ of＂Nusi 女＂ is severely worn, the past deciphering as ＂ ＂ was wrong, and the ＇Jin ＂ should be glossed as ＂qin~＂. The general meaning of the inscription would be that Nusi was diligent in serving the royal court, [because of which] on the day ofgui, the king bestowed two strings of cowries on Nusi, to commemorate which Nusi made this sacrificial vessel.
