《红楼梦》继承了桂花的原型意义、"比德"思路,用桂花形容袭人的性格,还使用了"蟾桂""折桂"两个与桂花有关的典故。《红楼梦》中出现的桂花既有秋桂,也有南方特有的春桂。《红楼梦》中有两次赏桂活动,各有特点。贾宝玉新折桂花送给贾母,曹雪芹的祖父曹寅也曾奉送桂花至北京潭柘寺。《红楼梦》中的桂花制品有药用、食用以及闺阁用物、洗洁用品之"添加剂"等多种用途,既体现了贾府日常生活的精致讲究,也可以看出南方特色。《红楼梦》中的"桂花夏家"生活原型很可能在苏州,明清时期苏州桂花冠绝天下,曹雪芹有直接或间接的苏州生活经验。
