Claude Chevalley:The Giant of BourbakiGroup and the Prolocutor of Mathematical Structure

Chevalley, one of the founders of the French group Bourbaki, made significant contribution to algebraic number theory and Lie group in mathematics. His pursuit of the structure and the rigorous, abstract style had profound effects on Bourbaki. Chevalley studied mathematics with Artin and Hasse in Germany in the 1930s. His mathematical works, as well as Bourbaki, were profoundly influenced by algebraic method and technique of German mathematicians. By analyzing Chevalley＇s work, this paper contributes to a better understanding of Bourbaki, as well as the development of algebraic number theory in the first half of the twentieth century.
