In the discussion of metropolis decline, the concept of Green Archipelago proposed by O.M.Ungers conceived shrinking cites as positive urban reality rather than a negative problem. This concept will be discussed in the historical context and interpreted in view of urban reality of contemporary Berlin. In this way, the significance of Green Archipelago could be clarified. The analyzing of historical context thus includes the context of theory formation and the context of reality. The former is consist of two significant influential factors, namely, the inspiration of architect Schinkel and design research during Ungers' teaching in Cornell University. The latter means its divergence with the architecture theory which dominated Berlin at that time. Basing on analysis above, the innovation of Ungers' concept will be revealed. Finally, through reinterpretation from contemporary urbanity of Berlin and the phenomenon of temporary reuse, I argue that the model of Green Archipelago is crucial to maintain urban identity and diversity of Berlin.
