跨越城市的发展而考察中国古典园林的形成和变化、特色和保持,是本篇论文的基本出发点。南京(金陵)在历史上是一个水系发达的城市,其中玄武湖存在最早,但是经过沧海桑田的城市变化,它依然风姿绰约,景致优雅。玄武湖何以形态、何以维持、何以风景?论文通过自六朝至民国之漫长变化的脉络而分析,是一段关于古典园林的演变故事,也是关涉城市与自然、实用与欣赏、政治与艺术的关联学术讨论。其中蕴含的智慧与经验、思考与运作,或于今天有借鉴价值。

The paper discusses the start, development, changes, special features and keeping of Chinese classical gardens from the perspective of urban development. Historically, Nanjing（Jinling） was a city enjoying a well-developed water system. Xuanwu Lake makes an earliest evidence of the water system. Time has made a fundamental change to the City of Nanjing. Fortunately, Xuanwu Lake is still there, with its grace and its elegant sceneries in the keep. The morphology, landscape and maintenance of Xuanwu Lake tells an evolution story of Chinese classical gardens. The paper chronicles the Six Dynasties to Minguo period （211-1930 about）that Xuanwu Lake has witnessed, allowing the readers to view the lake from the perspectives of city and mother nature, utility and entertainment, art and politics among others. The wisdom, experience, thoughts and functions embedded in the lake makes a valuable reference for today＇s viewers.
