摘要
经文翻译是异域宗教融入目标文化要应对的一个重要问题。景教在中国唐朝本土化的失败有经济、政治和文化上的多重原因,但经文的不当翻译策略也是景教在中国本土化失败的一个不可忽视的因素。对原典的翻译让位于编著和转述,对经文中重要神名及人名的不当翻译以及借用佛教、道教和儒学语汇传播景教的特定教义使景教在融入中国文化的过程中丧失了自身的独特性,给景教在民间传播制造了语言和理解上的障碍,客观上也成为景教在中国本土化失败的一个重要原因。
The translation of scriptures is a major consideration when the religion is intended to be spread to and rooted in an alien culture. Besides the current economic, political and cultural factors, the improper strategies employed in scripture translation also contributed to the failure of the spreading of Nestorianism in China in Tang Dynasty. The compilations and over-explanations in translation, the inconsistencies in the translations of the names of its important characters, the massive borrowing of terms form Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism and the departure from the basic doctrines created great barriers to the understanding of its fundamental doctrines among its potential Chinese believers.
