A Second Thought on Yan Fu's Translation Criticism

摘要严复的翻译实践与翻译思想是近代中国翻译史上的宝贵文化资源,但学界对其翻译批评思想的研究尚有不足。主要体现在两点:1)研究多集中于"信达雅"的诠释和"达恉"的批评,而对其间的逻辑联系探讨的不多;2)更重要的是,批评多基于当下对翻译的认识去发现严复批评思想的局限,而非历史语境的考察其翻译与翻译批评的合理性和有效性。 Yan Fu＇s translations and his thoughts on translation are important cultural resources in modern Chinese translation history. The study on his translation criticism seems inadequate in two ways. First,scholars focus on interpretations of＂faithfulness,expressiveness and elegance＂and on criticizing his＂exposition＂; and they seldom expound the logic relation between the two. Second and more important,the scholars base their criticisms on today＇s theories and find faults with Yan Fu＇s criteria without contextualizing and historicizing his translations and critical concepts.
