Nanoscience has emerged as a powerful new discipline that unites and empowers conventionally disparate scientific and engineering disciplines with a common perspective. Our foundation is centered around the twin goals of discovering and understanding the fundamental scaling laws for the behavior and pro- perties of matter as it is controlled on the nanoscale, and on developing the ability to synthesize artificial nanoscale building blocks in a controlled manner. The early successes of this approach were rapidly followed by the development of a wide range of new applications of these materials.
