Root-seeking and Root-Preservation:the Basic Themes of Chinese Philippine Literature

中菲两国间的经贸、文化交流渊源很深。中国汉朝曾派使者到菲。唐朝时期两国就通过海路进行贸易。从16世纪后期到现在,中国商民陆续成规模侨居菲律宾,加入了"流散"生活的行列。流散生活使他们身处边缘化境地,精神上也逐渐从母国文化中剥离、裂变。加之菲律宾曾长期成为西班牙和美国的殖民地,身处其间的华人一方面深受思乡怀远之苦,另一方面和菲律宾兄弟同遭异族压迫、在东西方文化的碰撞冲突中煎熬。这使得菲律宾华人在三重矛盾中生存:对母国文化的剥离与沉淀、与菲国文化的冲突与融合、对美西文化的拒斥与接受。在这样复杂的文化背景下,对"我是谁"的苦苦追问、"失根"的惶惑不安,"无根"的痛苦焦虑始终困扰着菲华世界。而治疗这些精神痛苦的唯一办法即是对自己作为炎黄子孙的民族之根的寻找和守护。这既是疗救菲华精神疾苦的灵丹妙药,也是菲华文学的基本主题。

The origin of the communication in trade and culture between China and Philippine is quite long.Chinese Han Dynasty once sent envoy to Philippine.In Tang Dynasty,there was trade through sea route betweenthe two countries.From late 16 thcentury till now,Chinese merchants continuously settled down in groups in Philippine and become a part of the people in＂diaspora＂,which allows them to live a marginalizedlife.In spiritual life,they were disintegrated from home culture.In addition,Philippine has been the colony of Spain and America for a long time.The Chinese there suffered the homesickness,the oppression from other nations and the conflicts between Eastern and Western cultures.Therefore,the Chinese Philippine have to live in these three contradictions,namely the disintegration from home culture,the conflicts and fusion with Philippine culture,and the refusal and acceptance of American and Spanish culture.In this complicated cultural background,the painstaking questioning of＂Who am I＂,the anxiety of losing their roots,and the agony of being rootless always disturb the world of Philippine Chines.The only way out for this spiritual suffering is the seeking and preservation of our national root as Chinese people,which will cure the mental pain of Chinese Philippine and becomes the basic themes of Chinese Philippine literature.
