Swedish director Ingmar Bergman＇s ultimate concern with＂the body＂in Tystnaden is conveyed through a pair of symbolic roles,Ester and Anna. Endowed with exceptional power,Bergman＇s＂body＂speaks out the truth with its silence. Ester,the dying elder sister,is lost in fierce hatred,while the younger sister Anna is robust,bold,adventurous and self-confident. They are representatives of Slave Morality and Master Morality. Self-defeating pretense of reason and real,physical vitality compete on the screen,to convey,equally forcefully,the message of the film： that in the exultant body is to be found the eternal source of life,love and thought; that there＇s no distance between the real City of God and secular life,mundane love and warm-blooded body; that the body is a concrete form of faith. The film subverts the body as created,sacrificed and written over,and highlights the vital presence of bodily discourse in divine silence.
