Tales of Vietnam( Lingnan zhiguai liezhuan) is an anthology of works of myth and folk legend that had significant influence on Vietnamese history and culture. This paper discusses how this book constructed the interactive relationship between Vietnam and the Imperial court of China in ancient times. From the Pre-Qin to Tang periods, the image of China is presented in various stories in this book as "North Bandits ",or "aggressor ". The interactive relationship between China and Vietnam is characterized as one of aggression and revolt. Based on a detailed analysis of these stories, this paper aims to explore the implications or ideology that the narrators want to convey and the narrative positions that they've adopted.
