In the history of translating bianwen into English,Arthur Waley was the first translator who contributed the pioneering work with his insightful research on the definition, author, annotation, and etc. of bianwen. Waley's readercentered translation strategies and the characteristics of texts determine his selection criteria, approaches, even the whole translating process, which can reasonably explain the phenomenon of deletion in his translated versions. This paper focuses on Waley's translation of bianwen, which can reveal the translation history of bianwen and Waley's contributions to Dunhuang Studies.
