山清水远、物阜民丰的浙北湖州,古来崇文尚教,耕读传家。由自然山水、风物人文之床而产出的翰墨书家,自是代不乏人,卓然翘楚,因此累积而名著,＂中国书画史,半部出湖州＂便成为了不惊之誉奇。这些丹青高手,多开宗立派,前有史载第一位画家三国时期的曹不兴,中有元季一代宗师赵孟頫,后有近代海派领袖吴昌硕,其余大家名家更是不计其数。
