The mysterious cooker unearthed in the tomb of Marquis Yi of Zeng is not a common bronze ware. Based on its structure, remaining food material, and fuel, cooking experiments indicated that it must have been a bronze cooker for frying crucian. Its structure and conditions when excavated showed that the cooker should be a combination of bronze frying plate and bronze stove. Inscription and emblazonment on the bronze ware unearthed in the tomb told that the cooker was likely to be a national present given to Marquis Yi of Zeng by King Hui of Chu to show the king' s gratitude for saving his father. Frying crucian made by the cooker was just the delicacy of Chu recorded in The Songs of Chu.
