This paper intends to improve our understanding of modernization theories and clarify the differences between modernization and westernization. It increases our understanding of the relationship between tradition and modernization through summarizing the empirical research of the relationship between the two variables by Western scholars, reviewing the modernization experiences of Japan and India, and revisiting the contradictions between tradition and modernization in China' s social development. Finally, the author attempts to distinguish the positive elements from the negative ones in both Chinese and Western cultures. It is the author' s hope that such an effort would lead to systematic distinction between the positive and negative elements in the traditional Chinese culture and Western culture to promote a healthy and smooth development of the Chinese society.
