The Mussel and the Oyster:Two Beauties in the Blue Sea

清末刘鹗所著的《老残游记》,开篇第一段就说蓬莱阁。而我认为,书中最为出色的一段情节是关于黑妞白妞说书的描写,那段文字曾入选高中语文教材。由黑妞与白妞,我联想到盛产于胶东沿海的两种著名海产品——都是贝类,也恰是一黑一白。它们是海虹和海蛎子。海虹的壳是黑的,比之为黑妞;海蛎子的壳是白的,比之为白妞。其二者在蓬莱人心目中的地位,大致无二。
