American Designed Landscape and Architecture Influenced by Chinese Elements: A Comprehensive List

由于基础材料的缺乏,中国元素对美国园林和建筑的影响这一历史现象从未引起中国和西方学术界的重视。旨在展示中国元素在不同时期对美国园林和建筑影响的历史实物,主体是91个中国对美国园林和建筑影响的案例。这些案例由作者自2008年开始,从收集的300多件相关历史资料(包括建筑图档、明信片、历史照片、报纸文章等)中总结而成,划分成3个时期,用5个表格进行展示:1860年以前、1860—1945年、1945年以后。每个实例名录信息包括编号、地点(所在城市和州)、园林和建筑名称、设计者、设计时间、场所(公园、广场)名称、场所设计者、设计事件及存毁情况。每个表格配有一幅简要地图以展示案例的分布情况。该名录可作为研究受中国影响的美国园林和建筑的基础资料,有待未来的扩充和修正。

This study presents a comprehensive list of designed landscape and architecture cases in America that indicate Chineseinfluences. The background, significance, existing research, and research method of the study are briefly introduced. The main body of thispaper is a list of 91 cases. It is summarized from about 500 historical evidences by the authors, including architectural archives, postcards,historical pictures, and newspapers. These cases are divided into three periods, which are before 1860, from 1860 to 1945, and after 1945.According the time division, five tables are developed to present cases in terms of order number, location, structure name, architecturaldesigner, architectural completion time, landscape （park, plaza, or place） designer, landscape completion time, and current condition.The excessive cases in the period from 1860 to 1930 are further divided into three geographical regions. Five maps companying thesetables show the geographic locations of the cases. The publication of this list, as the fundamental material to study Chinese influences onAmerican designed landscape and architecture, shares information with other researchers with the same research interests; and welcomescomments and critiques to improve this list.
