Peter Ackroyd has a unique perception of literary creation. As a postmodern writer, Ackroyd shows both similarities and differences from many of his contemporaries. With a strong historical sense, he possesses a passion and sense of responsibility for the historical tradition of English culture, and history has always been the subject and inspiration of his writing. Although his works vary in subjects, they all strive for "Englishness" by way of rewriting the history of London.
