The title of Alice Munro＇s short story ＂The Bear Came over the Mountain＂ is adapted from the North American nursery rhyme ＂The Bear Went over the Mountain,＂ with the verb ＂went＂ replaced by ＂came＂. This paper analyzes how Munro modifies the title of the children＇s song and, with its ironic, metaphorical and ambiguous meanings, addresses multiple themes of the short story.
